Fat Grafting and Breast Augmentation
Having ones fat transferred from one area of the body and injected into the breasts may not be that far off in the future. Currently there are tests being performed on this very subject and so far the testing is coming out positive. There are some surgeons out there that already perform this procedure and have since 80's with some great success.
The board certified physicians that have taken part in the study of using fat grafting for breast augmentation surgery are very much divided on the subject.
Some of the plastic surgeons believe that it is a wonderful development. They state that the fat injections can even help with patients that have had the rippling complication that happens with regular breast implants. The fat injections will fill out the tissue area surrounding implant and give the breast a fuller and smoother look. The fat injected breasts do not get the complications that breast implants are noted for. There is no hardening of the breast due to scar tissue healing around the fat injection as it does around a breast implant. There also is no fear of rupturing with the use of fat injections.
There are other surgeons that have a couple of concerns on the use of fat as an alternative to breast implants. One is that the fat can calcify in the breasts and this makes it harder for mammograms to be effective. Another concern is that they are not sure how much of the injected fat will be absorbed into the patients body. There is also the concern on the limitation in size of the breasts by using fat injections. It is not meant for women that want to have significant breast enlargements and can typically only increase the breast size up to one cup size. The patient also needs to have an adequate amount on another area of the body to be able to do the transfer.
